Northwest SMMEs offered a lifeline

Productivity SA, a public entity of the Department of Employment and Labour which carries the responsibility to fulfil an economic or social mandate of government, to promote employment growth and productivity thereby contributing to South Africa’s socio-economic development and competitiveness has been roped in to revive the fortunes of SMMEs in the Northwest. This intervention forms part of the response by Productivity SA and government to the economic contraction caused by the pandemic Covid-19.

In a programme run by the North West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT), Productivity SA has been sourced to assist SMMEs in the Northwest to grow their productivity  through the Business Turnaround and Recovery Programme. An amount of R2 million has been set aside for the programme.

The main objective of this programme is to implement Business Turnaround and Recovery  within ten Small Medium Enterprises(SMEs) identified by DEDECT. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Productivity SA, Mr Mothunye Mothiba says the Business Turnaround and Recovery Programme aims to diagnose and identify problems and constraints having a direct impact on the SMEs ’s sustainability, financial performance, employment, productivity, access to markets and access to finance.

Mr Mothiba says this is an intervention which delivers turnaround and contingency plans for companies that are faced with the risk of financial ruin, extensive job loss and sustainability challenges. The implementation of Business Turnaround and Recovery Programme is envisaged to run for a maximum of nine months depending on the size of the entity ‘s challenges and strategies to be implemented.

The vision of Productivity SA is to lead and inspire a productive and competitive South Africa and its mission is to improve productivity by diagnosing, advising, implementing, monitoring and evaluating solutions aimed at improving South Africa’s sustainable growth, development and employment through increased competitiveness.
