Adapting Productivity principles to schools

Productivity SA is launching a Social Development programme of Productivity Values, which is a beginning of a series of Continuous Productivity Improvement Performance projects in support of the School.

As part of a Social Responsibility initiative Productivity SA will introduce and train Mikateka Primary School in Ivory Park, Tembisa and Halfway House Primary in Midrand on Productivity principles.

Productivity SA in Partnership with Halfway House Primary will be launching a Social Development programme of Productivity Values and Character Transformation Workshop with the objective of inculcating the productivity values in learners, staff and parents at a beneficiary school Mikateka Primary School in Ivory Park in a twinning project initiated by Halfway House Primary in Midrand.

The workshop is a start of a continuous performance improvement project for the schools to improve their academic performances and acquire productivity related knowledge, skills, values and attitude that promotes a productive behaviour.
The Character Transformation Programme entails six (6) core values namely:

1. Trustworthiness
2. Respect
3. Responsibility
4. Fairness
5. Caring Citizenship

Productivity SA will introduce the schools to Productivity Principles such as 5s (Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu, and Shitsuke) and Goal alignment amongst others depending on the needs of the schools.

The logic behind the 5S practices is that organisation, neatness, cleanliness, standardisation and self-discipline at the workplace can help production of high quality products and delivery of high quality services with little or no waste, and with high productivity. In the same vein Productivity SA asserts that 5S concept holds advantages when to the schools environment and these include:

• Self-discipline
• Self-confidence for self-management
• Clean class room & environment

5S has the potential to create an environment that is conducive for teaching and learning in the school, not only to improve learning performance but also to establish effective quality processes as prerequisites for good products and services. 5S in schools may create a visual space in the schools to improve productivity and make learning easier by adapting areas such as class-room lay-out for ease of access and teaching.

Mr Pillay, the Principal of Halfway House Primary say” this initiative will add much value to improving the quality of teaching and learning and further moulding responsible citizens”.

The launch will be held at Mikateka Primary school on Tuesday the 19th February 2015, in Ivory Park, Tembisa where all stakeholders and the Department of Education (DoE) are expected to attend.
